À propos de Palermo Atlas. Leoluca Orlando. Mayor of Palermo, Forward pp.5-6. Extraits
«The great work that went in Palermo Atlas offers the city extremely valuable analyses and reflections, providing the tools to connect the threads of its past and recent historique to future prospects for development. This urban research is a careful and passionate study of the complexity of Palermo, of its inhabitants and of the historical and contemporary connections between the city, the Mediterranean and Europe.
Palermo Atlas testifies to the desire of the City administration and of Manifesta to permeate the 2018 biennal with the cultural richness of our city and its customs of hospitality and of a peaceful coexistence.

Palermo is the European city that has changed the most, in terms of culture, in the past forty years. Other cities, such as Berlin, Moscow, Warsaw and Prague, have changed as a result of constitutional change and international events. Palermo has changed and continues to change without the constitutional or state system of Italy having changed. It is a cultural change, of technical innovation and life style.
What was once the capital of the suffocating mafia is today, thanks to an ethical revolt fuelled by civil courage, the Capital of Culture. We are working for Palermo to become not only Capital of Culture but capital of cultures, from all over the world, thanks to all those who have chosen to live here.
In the day-to-day and domestic life of our city, differences are seen as richness and opportunity. Here —and this is an irreversible choice— there are no migrants; who arrives In Palermo becomes a Palermitan. Palermo is increasingly a role model, in which culture is the defining element that relates people to each other. Coexistence is part of the normal routine, no longer and not only a special project. The only race we recognize here is the human race.
I am a person (io sono persona) is the slogan of the proposal drafted with the Charter of Palermo to make freedom of movement an inviolable human right.
What is culture? Culture is the coexistence of diversity. In this view, Palermo acts like a lighthouse in the Mediterranean. A beacon of respect for the human rights of everyone. This is rooted and stratified in hospitality.
What is beauty? Beauty is the harmony of ethics and aesthetics. Palermo capital of cultures, capital of beauties.
With Palermo Atlas, Manifesta has penetrated the stratification and syncretism of Palermo’s cultures, and touched the soul of the city.»
