wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p><strong>We, designers of the first Vertical Forest in Milan, invite<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>architects, urban planners, botanists, agronomists, forestry corps, tree\u00a0growers, geographers, ethologists, landscape scientists, technicians, researchers and experts in green care and urban forestry, real estate developers, administrators and representatives of local institutions and civil society, members and representatives of\u00a0 international organisations, funding agencies, universities and research institutes, and NGOs,<\/p>\n<p><strong>to consider that:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 by 2030,\u00a0<strong>60%<\/strong>\u00a0of the<strong>\u00a0global population<\/strong>\u00a0is projected to live in\u00a0<strong>urban areas<\/strong>.<br \/>\n\u2013 cities consume<strong>\u00a075%<\/strong>\u00a0of the world\u2019s\u00a0<strong>natural resources<\/strong>\u00a0and account for more than\u00a0<strong>70%<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0<strong>global CO2 emissions<\/strong>.<br \/>\n\u2013 cumulative\u00a0<strong>emissions<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0<strong>CO2<\/strong>, together with methane and other greenhouse gases, largely determine\u00a0<strong>global mean surface warming of the planet<\/strong>,\u00a0causing ice melting, biodiversity loss and rising sea levels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>and to consider also that:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2013<strong>\u00a0forests and trees<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 which are at risk of continuous erosion all over the world \u2013\u00a0<strong>absorb<\/strong>\u00a0nearly\u00a0<strong>40%<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0<strong>fossil fuel emissions<\/strong>\u00a0largely produced by our cities every year.<br \/>\n\u2013\u00a0<strong>leaves and roots<\/strong>\u00a0of a mature tree\u00a0<strong>absorb CO2<\/strong>\u00a0through photosynthesis and help reduce the pollutants (responsible for a high percentage of respiratory diseases and premature deaths) present in the air.<br \/>\n\u2013 if a\u00a0<strong>single tree<\/strong>\u00a0can bring great benefits to the city and its inhabitants, an\u00a0<strong>urban forest<\/strong>\u00a0can be an extraordinary help to<strong>\u00a0improve the quality<\/strong>\u00a0of health and life in a city.<\/p>\n<p>we believe that:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013\u00a0<strong>cities<\/strong>, which are largely\u00a0<strong>responsible<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0<strong>climate change problems<\/strong>, have\u00a0the opportunity to become an\u00a0<strong>integral part of their own solution<\/strong>\u00a0, by increasing the number of\u00a0<strong>forests and trees<\/strong>\u00a0that can \u201cfight the enemy\u201d on its own ground (the city), using\u00a0<strong>CO2 as fertiliser<\/strong>.<br \/>\n\u2013 increasing<strong>\u00a0forests and trees<\/strong>\u00a0in world\u2019s cities can help absorb\u00a0<strong>CO2<\/strong>, drastically<strong>\u00a0reduce pollution, energy consumption<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>\u201curban heat island\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0effect, increasing biodiversity of living species and\u00a0making cities safer, more pleasant, healthier and attractive.<br \/>\n\u2013\u00a0<strong>a global action<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>on urban forestry<\/strong>\u00a0will help to prevent global temperature from rising\u00a0<strong>above 2\u00b0 C<\/strong>, the maximum acceptable treeshold defined by the COP 21 agreement in Paris (2015).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-2\">\n<div class=\"vc_column-inner\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-10\">\n<div class=\"vc_column-inner\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>therefore:<\/p>\n<p>we have the duty to launch a\u00a0<strong>global campaign on urban forestry<\/strong>\u00a0in order to\u00a0<strong>multiply the presence of forests and trees in our cities<\/strong>.<br \/>\nSuch a campaign should start with these major\u00a0<strong>actions<\/strong>:<br \/>\n\u2013 protect and increase\u00a0<strong>permeable and green surfaces<\/strong>\u00a0in the city,<br \/>\n\u2013 create\u00a0<strong>new parks<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>gardens,<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2013 transform\u00a0<strong>city roofs<\/strong>\u00a0into\u00a0<strong>lawns<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>vegetable gardens,<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2013 transform\u00a0<strong>perimeter walls<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>urban barriers<\/strong>\u00a0into\u00a0<strong>green fa\u00e7ades,<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2013 transform\u00a0<strong>urban voids<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0courtyards<\/strong>\u00a0into\u00a0<strong>green oasis,<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2013 promote\u00a0<strong>community gardens<\/strong>\u00a0and implement\u00a0<strong>urban agriculture,<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2013 use\u00a0<strong>tree roots<\/strong>\u00a0to decontaminate\u00a0<strong>polluted soils,<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2013 create a\u00a0<strong>network of green corridors<\/strong>\u00a0(tree-lined avenues, street trees\u2026)\u00a0to connect parks, forests, and\u00a0<strong>green buildings,<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2013 multiply the number of\u00a0<strong>green buildings<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>vertical forests,<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2013 create\u00a0<strong>new orbital forests<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>woodlands<\/strong>\u00a0all around our cities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_custom_1542297164118\">\n<div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-2\">\n<div class=\"vc_column-inner\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-10\">\n<div class=\"vc_column-inner\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>thus:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013\u00a0if we want to\u00a0<strong>reverse climate change<\/strong>,<br \/>\n\u2013 if we want to\u00a0<strong>favour the survival<\/strong>\u00a0of living species,<br \/>\n\u2013 if we want our\u00a0<strong>cities<\/strong>\u00a0to be\u00a0<strong>greener, healthier and more pleasant places,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>urban forestry<\/strong>\u00a0should be a\u00a0<strong>priority<\/strong>\u00a0in the international agenda of governments and local and international institutions.<br \/>\n<strong>The next months will be crucial to pledge your support, and collect your experiences and urban forestry projects, in preparation for the first World Forum on Urban Forests, promoted by FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) with Municipality of Mantova, SISEF (Societ\u00e0 Italiana di Selvicoltura ed Ecologia Forestale), Politecnico di Milano, which will be held from 28 November 2018 to 1 December 2018 in Mantova, Italy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-2\">\n<div
